The prefecture of Kavala is situated in the centre of East Macedonia. It is only 100 km away from Thessaloniki and within a stone's throw from Thrace; it is marked out by two rivers, Strymonas and Nestos.

The scenery varies pleasantly from beaches to vast plain and woodlands interspersed with quaint small restaurants, cafeterias and fully-equipped hotels.Weather conditions are always according to season. It is in this place that one can appreciate each season's color: summer is cool at the seaside, autumn leaves look golden on the mountain, winter is coupled with a snug warm corner and spring is brightly colored and scented.

Access to Kavala is either by car or by plane. There are 2 airports offering many flights, both from Athens and internationally. The one in Kavala is only 20 minutes drive from the town. The other in Thessalonica is 80 minutes drive with the new motorway.

Starting your sailing trip from Kavalas port you have many options depending on the days that you plan to sail. In general these are the following options :

Apart from spending a night in the beautiful Kavalas port where there are permanent anchorages for boats, you can spend a night in Iraklitsa, a little harbor (6 miles west) or Keramoti fishing harbor which is 15 miles east, and very close to Nestos river delta by the sea. On the main land you can spend your days swimming in many of the bays as well as visiting 2 small islands Fidonissi and Thassopoula.

The shortest spot from Kavala is 12 miles. In general there is one marina in the capital on the north side of the harbour (free of charge), across the bay 3 more nice fishing harbors and many excellent protected bays to anchor for the night. Thassos is a really nice island full of pine and olive trees reaching down to the sea. The mainland villages also worth a visit.

LIMNOS ISLAND

This is 40 miles south from the south port of Thassos called Limenaria. The main town on the island is called Myrina. This pretty island town has some very friendly people. The best anchorage sites are on the west –south side of the harbour.

SAMOTHRAKI ISLAND

Samothraki's natural attributes are dramatic, big and untamed. There are thick forests of olive and pine, dense shrubbery and damp, dark glades where waterfalls plunge into deep, icy pools. Hora nestles almost invisibly in a circular pine-flecked hollow. The streets are twisting cobbled, the houses are crumbling, basalt-built and red tiled, some of grey stone while others white-washed. The landscape is brooding.

The most popular base of Samothraki is Therma (alternatively known as Loutra): an attractive setting with a profusion of plane and horse-chestnut trees, dense greenery and gurgling creeks. Therma is a spa hamlet; the hot springs are divided into three categories, depending on the temperature of the waters. Taking a bath there will undeniably be a great experience, even if you don't have arthritis or rheumatisms.

Finally, you can walk along the Fionas River to the Vathres rock pools. After an easy 40-minute walk along a fairly well-marked track you will come to a large rock-pool fed by a dramatic waterfall. Locals call the river "The Murderer", because the winter rains can transform it into a raging torrent.

Chalkidiki Peninsulas

Its particular shape reminds of three fingers pointing the Aegean Sea or Poseidon’s trident. Those three peninsulas are called Cassandra, Sithonia and Mt. Athos.
The peninsula of Halkidiki is a real paradise, endowed by nature with enchanting coves and bays, rocky headlands, beaches with golden sand and crystalline waters; olive and pine forest complete the amazing picture of Halkidiki holiday.

Of the three "fingers" of the peninsula, only the middle and the western one (Sithonia and Cassandra) are welcoming tourism with incredible natural beauty and developed touristy facilities.
The Cassandra is ideal for all-night party and bustling beaches; Sithonia is the perfect place for nature lovers, quietness and deserted beaches. The eastern most prong belongs to the monastic community of Athos, the Holy Mountain.
Visitation to it is strictly regulated: men must ask for a permit six months in advance and women are not allowed.
Halkidiki has interesting villages, an outstanding beauty and the best and more beautiful beachesof the entire Greece, famous for their crystalline waters and their pure white sand.
Holidays in Halkidiki are ideal for everyone, with quietness and deserted beaches on Sithonia and full of nightlife on Cassandra.
The capital of Halkidiki is Poligiros, which is situated in the centre of the peninsula, 69 km from Thessaloniki

Weather patterns in north Aegean

In Thassos and mainland costs the sea conditions are usually light, no more than 5B. The direction is E but after midday there are thermal winds SW up to 4B, excellent for sailing.

East from Thassos, sailing to Samothraki sometimes the wind rises up to 7B from East. Its good to get a weather forecast before you start your sail there. South from Thassos the wind direction changes gradually from east to north.
