“Bareboating”, “self skipper” or “self sail” are interchangeable terms, and mean you hire your own luxury yacht for your private sailing holiday – ie skipper it yourself! Your vessel is then similar to a (mobile) self contained apartment, where you can plan your own catering (and beverages) to suit your preferences! (for an additional cost, provisions can be made available onboard!)

Bareboating gives you the privacy and control to tailor your own holiday, whether that is fishing from the decks, diving and snorkelling, sunset cocktails, moor and spend each evening at a different island or island resort – you could even charter 2 yachts and plan a regatta!

The best thing is that formal sailing experience is not always required at some of the more protected locations - if you can sail a windsurfer or sailing dingy, you are on your way to your dream holiday! Bareboating companies also provide such a high level of support via comprehensive briefings, 24 hour radio and mobile phone contact, and speed boat call outs, you don’t need to be a salty-sea-dog to take your own luxury charter yacht! We also have a large range of motor vessels for bareboat, to provide an even easier holiday experience with all the perks!

Bareboating is safe! Bareboating is controlled by government Marine Safety regulations which establish safe sailing areas, vessel safety standards, and minimum briefing requirements. Many of the popular bareboating destinations are protected by expansive coral reefs, islands, or are within massive inshore tidal lakes, providing smooth, sheltered waters and plentiful anchoring options that will ensure comfortable and glassy waters each evening. Suggested moorings and anchorages will also be provided at each briefing, and your charter company is always on hand to provide advice if assistance is required.

 

 

Experience Requirements

What Experience Do I Need?

3 easy questions to answer:

  1. Do you have experience navigating?

  2. Do you have experience anchoring in tidal zones?

  3. Do you have experience with sail handling?

 

The Long Version:

There are certain sailing area around the world that are ideal cruising zones for the less experienced with vast anchorages and protected boating grounds.  Experience requirements very from destinations and although some are easier than others you still require general boating knowledge.  You will be given a comprehensive briefing and have the opportunity to take a skipper / sailguide for the first half day or more if you need to refresh your skills or get your confidence up.  Experience with sails is required to charter a sail boat. Operators have varying levels of experience requirements and we can recommend the right one for you or a sailing school nearby!

Great ways of demonstrating your experience is if you:

  • Are or have been a boat owner

  • Previous charterer 

  • Experience with sails on smaller vessels

  • Qualified – motorboat licence or sailing qualification

  • Experience as skipper as opposed to crew is also important, and some competent crew is also important!

Your experience will be verified through the sailing paperwork required to be completed upon booking.  If your skills are little rusty, a sailguide might be required to get you back to speed! or usk us to refer you to a sailing school that does 'Bareboat Familiarisation' courses.

Don’t forget that even if you have boating experience, we can arrange a fully private crewed charter to take away the stress – you can take control if you like, and hand over when it is time to relax!  We have solutions to everyone’s needs!
